A Welcoming Congregation
It has been asked, "Why are we singling out GLBT people to welcome to our congregation? Isn't it the job of our membership committee to welcome everyone?
In our Sunday morning Forums on April 13 and April 20 we will seek answers to this question by:
- Exploring thoughts, feelings and current knowledge,
- Probing the origins of our beliefs about gender and orientation,
- Exploring the relationship between religion and homosexuality,
- Testing attitudes toward sexual orientation in society and to current social issues such as AIDS, ageism, sexism, racism and so on,
and devising a congregational, and individual, strategies to become more welcoming of GLBT people and their families.
If it is important for FCCE to be a church where GLBT can feel safe bringing their whole selves , without indirectly inviting them to leave, there is work to be done. It is hard work to overcome oppression, but work that is necessary to welcome GLBT people to a place they know is safe to be open and involved in congregational life.
Please join us Sunday, in the sanctuary at 11:30. We will start by building a common vocabulary, look at what we know and how we learned it, homophobia and oppression, an aggressive agenda for sure, and one flexible enough to allow for additional conversation on this important issue.
