Joys and Concerns:  We rejoice with Deb Shamlin’s family as they gather in Ohio to celebrate her father’s birthday.

Please Volunteer for Hilda's Place - On the first Saturday night of each month, our church is responsible for providing dinner for the 30 or so residents of Hilda's Place, a homeless shelter located in the basement of the Lake Street Church.  This is a rewarding and fun activity, and much appreciated by the residents.  It's a great service opportunity for a family or two or three people who might like to work together.

MANY THANKS to those who have cooked and served in the past several months (if I have inadvertently omitted your name, I apologize):  Nancy Anderson, Bob Krause and family, Betty Phillips, Laurie Brown, Laura Wilson, Bob Gaskill, The McFadden-Frangedakis family,  Joan and Tom Lindsey, Sheran Fiedler, Joe, Lyn and Julia Page, The Sprague family, Bernice Valentinas and Jeff Roseberry.

I am currently looking for anyone interested in working together with Andy Plasz to make dinner on Saturday, January 5.  Please contact me via email (mcfran@ameritech.net) or phone (847-332-2618) to volunteer for January 5 or any month in 2008.  Thanks!  Elaine Frangedakis

The Sunday Afternoon Book Discussion Group will meet on Sunday, January 13, 2008 at 4:00 pm in the Brown Parlor at the Church House.  Ann Vikner will lead a discussion of A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.  You are welcome and encouraged to come to these informal discussions

Today’s anthem, middle hymn, and offertory are all based on this morning’s first scripture reading from Isaiah 11. The anthem “Lions and Oxen” was composed by Joel Martinson (b. 1960) who is currently Director of Music at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas.   The text for the hymn “Isaiah the Prophet Has Written of Old” was written in 1982 by Joy Patterson (b.1931) who is an elder in First Presbyterian Church, Wausau, Wisconsin. The offertory “Joy in the Morning” was composed by Natalie Sleeth (1930 -1992) who was born in Evanston, IL.

TWO SPECIAL MUSIC SERVICES FOR CHRISTMAS

On Sunday morning, December 16, the Chancel Choir will sing the Christmas Portion of Handel's "Messiah."  This favorite holiday work will be accompanied by harpsichord, strings, and oboes.  On Christmas Eve, the Chancel Choir and orchestra will present favorite carol settings including Rutter's "Shepherd's Pipe Carol" during the 11:00 p.m. Candlelight Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. Celebrate Christmas with your First Congregational Family and invite neighbors and friends to enjoy the glory of Christmas through our special musical offerings.
