Our service music today features settings of African-American music. The organ music was composed by Dr. John Behnke, Professor of Music at Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin. The solo and offertory are arrangements by William Levi Dawson (1899 -1990) who is known and revered the world over as one of the greatest contributors to the art of the African-American music tradition. Dawson’s outstanding talent in composition won him a scholarship from the American Conservatory in Chicago where, in 1927 he earned a master of music degree. From 1926 -1930, his skill as a trombonist earned him an appointment as first trombonist in the Chicago Civic Orchestra. As a composer, Dawson’s “Negro Folk Symphony” was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski and received international acclaim. As a conductor, Dawson performed with his 100 member Tuskegee Institute Chorale at the opening of New York City’s Radio City Music Hall (’32-’33) and at the White House for Presidents Hoover (’32) and Roosevelt (’33).
Hilda’s Place Volunteers Needed - On the first Saturday night of each month, our church is responsible for providing dinner for the 30 or so residents of Hilda's Place, a homeless shelter located in the basement of the Lake Street Church. This is a rewarding and fun activity, and much appreciated by the residents. It's a great service opportunity for a family or two or three people who might like to work together. If you are able to help out, please call Elaine Frangedakis at 847-332-2618 or email at mcfran@ameritech.net.
Your chance to Shape Evanston’s Climate Action Plan to fulfill the city’s commitment to the Kyoto Protocol on climate is Tuesday, November 13, 7-9 p.m. at Evanston Civic Center, 2100 Ridge, 4th Floor, Parasol Room. (See flyer in the Narthex.)
Affordable home-ownership opportunity - Do you know a family of 5 or 6 committed to home ownership, but with a family income of $64,350 (for 5) or $69,150 (for 6)? (See Citizens’ Lighthouse Community Land Trust flyer in the Narthex.)
