ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to First Congregational Church! We invite visitors to sign the Guest Book and join us for refreshments and fellowship after worship. If you are visiting today with children, please join us for Sunday School beginning after Disciple Dialogue with a recessional by the children to our Church House, three doors away. We also have an infant room, with a changing table, crib and comfortable rocker on the lower level. If you need those facilities during worship, an usher will be happy to escort you.

You are welcomed and seated today by Jean Herbert, Cheri Weil, Sandy Whiteley and Steve Wilson.

The lay reader today is Patty Sprague.

The greeter today is Merna Johnson.

The chancel flowers today are given by Mary Ellen Buell and Sally Buell Sheinberg in memory of husband and father James Wallace Buell.

Today’s anthem texts are from the liturgy for the Jewish High Holydays. The High Holydays began with the observance of Rosh Hashanah (New Year) this past Wednesday evening, and conclude with Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) next Saturday. Max Janowski (1912 – 1991), world-renowned composer and master of Jewish liturgy, set these prayers to music. Professor Janowski was Director of Music at Chicago ’s K. A. M. Isaiah Israel Temple in Hyde Park from 1938 to 1990. The prelude music, Kol Nidre, is also part of the High Holyday repertoire.

To allow for more time in Sunday school, the time for announcements has been moved so that children may leave for their classes a bit earlier.

Sunday Afternoon Book Discussion Group - The first meeting of the Sunday Afternoon Book Discussion Group will be on Sunday, October 14, 2007. Our first book is Reading Judas: The Gospel of Judas and the Shaping of Christianity by Elaine Pagels at 4:00 pm in the church house. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend these informal meetings. Read more about the Fall Reading List.

Donating chancel flowers is a wonderful way to honor someone special in your life, commemorate a special occasion (perhaps a birthday or anniversary), to say thank you, or to honor the memory of a friend or family member. The chancel flowers sit on the communion table in the chancel. The flowers cost $40. Donations are acknowledged in the Sunday bulletin. For more information or to make a donation, contact the church office at 847 864-8332.

Immediately after a short worship service on September 30, Rev. Roghair will lead a discussion of the things that give you hope for meeting FCCE goals. Reading Christianity for the Rest of Us or I Refuse to Lead a Dying Church will prepare you to contribute to this discussion. Buy or borrow a copy of this book today.

Thank you to Deb Shamlin, Director of Religious Education, for leading us in worship today while Rev. Roghair is away.

Come Sing With Us! The Chancel Choir meets for rehearsal at 11:30 this morning in the Church House. No audition is required and all are welcome. Come join us!
